DID YOU KNOW?
• Over 58 million Americans are overweight;
• Over 40 million Americans are obese;
• Over 3 million Americans are morbidly obese;
• More than 80% of Americans do not engage in adequate physical activity;
• More than one quarter of all Americans are considered to be "completely sedentary";
• In adults between 30 and 40 years old, there has been greater than 78% increase in Type II diabetes cases since 1990.
• Only 4 percent of children were considered obese in 1982. Now, more than 30% are.
• More than one quarter of all obese children are showing symptoms of the development of Type 2 diabetes mellitus;
• Of those children developing Type II diabetes, more than 60 percent of them are also showing one or more signs of cardiovascular disease;
• Our children are taught how and what to eat by us - their parents and advisors.
NASPE
What Constitutes a Quality Physical Education Program?
The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) believes that every student in our nation's schools, from kindergarten through grade 12, should have the opportunity to participate in quality physical education.
What PE Should Do?
- Develop the health-related fitness
- Develop physical competence and cognitive understanding about physical activity
- Adopt healthy and physically active lifestyles.
What PE Should Include?
- Instruction in a variety of motor skills that are designed to enhance the physical, mental, and social/emotional development of every child
- Fitness education and assessment to help children understand, improve and/or maintain their physical well-being
- Development of cognitive concepts about motor skill and fitness
- Opportunities to improve their emerging social and cooperative skills and gain a multi-cultural perspective
- Promotion of regular amounts of appropriate physical activity now and throughout life
